The bore is the same as the long-gone Yanmar 3HM35 which developed 33.5 brake horsepower at 3400rpm from 1282cc but the stroke is slightly shorter. The new marine diesel engine is not just a "stroked" or bored-out version of the older unit but has completely new cylinder bore and piston stroke dimensions. And even better, the new engine has the same footprint as the 3YM30 so repowering is a cinch.

Yet the overall shaftdrive package is only 4kg or three per cent heavier. Yanmar has done a supersize trick by increasing the piston displacement to enable the engine to develop the same power but at lower rpm, and slightly boost torque output to 76 Newton metres at 2000rpm compared to 69.5 at 2000 to 2500rpm. I tested twins mounted in a Lagoon 38 cat a while back now and was way impressed with their smoke-free running, great midrange torque and excellent fuel efficiency, especially combined with the brilliant Gori overdrive folding props. Not that long ago I reviewed the recently released Yanmar 3YM30AE, designed to replace the long-running and incredibly popular Yanmar 3YM30 marine engine. But it look OK then maybe it is time to get an opinion from a Yanmar mechanic.Boats powered by marine diesel engines like the Yanmar 3YM30AE saildrive are likely to command a higher resale value compared to other marine engines. Good luck, if the propeller is a three blade 12" diameter x 7" pitch or a two blade 12" diameter x 8" pitch, it should be OK. It should have the diameter and pitch stamped on it. Don't assume the previous owner had the correct size. I know it cost money for a lift, but you should check your propeller. Engine overload due to wrong propeller, rope in propeller or dirty hull Plugged exhaust/kink in exhaust hose (you have a very long exhaust hose) Plugged air filter (a YSM-8 does not have an air filter) Just checked my copy of "Marine Diesel Engines" by Nigel Calder and he says that black smoke can be caused by: I would expect your Yanmar YSM8 would be set up similar to my YSM-12.

Similar size boat except your LWL is shorter and your YSM-8 is mounted your under the V-berth. I'm familiar with the Yamaha 25, great sailboat. I never checked the pump timing, do you think this may be a problem? I'll have to wait until I pull her out to check the pitch. No, I blew a head gasket so I pulled the head, cleaned and lapped the valves, cleaned the exhaust elbow(that was not very dirty) and put her back together. I dont have a tach so it is hard to tell. Unknown but I have no reason to beleave it is any different than the stock one Thanks for the input, Ill try to answer the best I can, I purchased the boat only 6 months ago so I don,t have a lot of info. It is usually not expensive to reduce a propeller diameter and/or adjust the pitch.
#YANMAR 8 HP DIESEL FUEL FULL#
The boat originally came with a CS3LH13x9x1 that could not get to full load speed, caused black smoke and motor overheating. I have an YSM12 in my CAL 2-25 with a Campbell Sailor CS3LH12x7x1 propeller. Most sail boats with a displacement of around 5000 lb, 22 ft LWL, 8 HP nominal and a propeller speed of 1500 RPM use a 12" diameter propeller with 7" pitch. If you cannot reach 3200 RPM under full load your propeller is probably too large and/or has too much pitch. Did you perform the motor work to try to solve the black smoke problem? I believe that black smoke is usually an indication of motor overloading. What is your maximum loaded motor RPM? It should be 3200 RPM.
#YANMAR 8 HP DIESEL FUEL SERIES#
What is your maximum no-load (neutral) motor RPM? The YS_8 series governor should limit it to 3400 RPM. What propeller diameter and pitch do you have?

Is it safe to assume you have a CAL 2-25 when your profile boat type is "2 25"? Is it safe to assume you have a Yanmar YSB/YSE/YSM-8 with the typical 2:1 gear ratio? * Can you give us a bit more information *
